Description

[EARLY PHOTOGRAPHY]. Whole plate daguerreotype of a masonic subject housed in original frame.

A striking daguerreotype portrait of a gentleman with thick beard and wavy locks, presented here in masonic regalia including fringed vestment and apron. 6 x 8 in. (sight), housed in an ornately gold-painted oval frame. (Tarnishing to edges, some minor surface imperfections, retains clarity; oxidation spotting to mat; unexamined out of the frame.)

The daguerreotypist highlighted a few details of the sitter's regalia with gold paint, making them stand out, including the star-shaped pin on his shirt. The sitter's apron features an all-seeing eye symbol on the flap, and an archway or tent symbol below.

This lot is located in Cincinnati.
